One of the best parts of diving into the world of entrepreneurship is making connections with other small business owners. I especially love meeting other female jewelry designers—virtually or in real life. I find it inspirational to see and admire the work other jewelers create.
I recently joined the Los Angeles branch of the Women's Jewelry Association and look forward to being further inspired by creative women in my field. Beauty and creativity build on each other, bringing even more positive light into the world. As Women's History Month draws to a close, I wanted to share some of the jewelry designers I admire.
Sydney Evan
With a company name crafted from her children's names and a whimsical touch, designer Rosanne Karmes embodies the admirable traits common among the women designers on my must-follow list. Her eye for design leans toward her ability to combine the things about which she's the most passionate, including symbolism, family, and spirituality. In addition to her own inspired designs, I respect her willingness to work with her clients to create individualized pieces.
Sheryl Lowe
Sheryl Lowe finds inspiration all around the global community, but she focuses on making sure her luxury brand benefits those around her—especially women.
"As a devoted mother and wife raised by a single mother and grandmother, working for women and children’s organizations holds a special place in Sheryl’s heart. Currently, a portion of the brand’s proceeds are donated to support The Women’s Alzheimers Movement." Sheryl Lowe, Our Story
Kendra Scott
You know I focus my jewelry line culture on the pillars of homemade, cultural representation, gemstones, and giving back. My commitment to those ideals helps me to appreciate a business owner like Kendra Scott, who focuses her energy on the core values of family, fashion, and philanthropy. I love her focus on using color in unique ways, but I find myself most inspired by her Kendra Cares program. The program works with pediatric hospital patients, a superbly loving way to give back to the community.
Nina Segal
The daughter of a fashion legend and jewelry designer / artist, Nina Segal absorbed the fashion world from a combination of real-world exposure and a course of study in college that touched on sculpture, art, and design. I appreciate the way she finds inspiration in "nature, the ocean, and beautiful stones," and truly believe her pieces meld the sensibility needed for everyday wear with a timeless aesthetic. I consistently browse her Instagram for ideas about layering unexpected pieces.
Don't forget to shop local!
Inspiring designers produce gorgeous work in all corners of the country. Locally, I enjoy browsing Amarees and Fleur de Lys, two very different but very compelling woman-owned businesses.
A'marre's, in Newport Beach, strives to bring European-inspired style to southern California residents. You can't beat the view from the location, and the mother and her daughters that own the store work tirelessly to make your experience flawless.
I also adore Fleur de Lys, located in Costa Mesa. Billing itself as a modern mercantile, the storefront offers artisanal goods from local and global craftsman. I could browse there for hours, and always leave with something I didn't even know I needed until I saw it!
